Tax records - how long should you keep them?

New tax season is almost upon us, but what do we do with our prior documents and tax returns? According to the IRS, you should keep copies of your tax returns and supporting documentation for at least three years.  Certain documents should be kept for 7 years should you need to amend your return.  Documents pertaining to the sale of real estate should also be kept for 7 years.
